Analizamos el significado de “Thriller” de Michael Jackson, una de las canciones más exitosas de todos los tiempos y un clásico indiscutible para Halloween.
Datos curiosos de “Thriller”
El compositor de la letra, Rod Temperton, puso “Starlight” como título provisional de la canción y el estribillo que hoy dice “cause this is thriller, thriller night” entonces era “Starlight, starlight sun”.
El productor del tema, Quincy Jones, pensó que no era un buen título porque, además, estaba previsto que diera título al disco. Rod pensó entonces en “Midnight Man”, que acabó derivando en “Thriller”, una letra que tardó “un par de horas” en escribir.
El estilo musical de “Thriller” es disco-funk, va a un tempo moderado de 120 bpm y la caja de ritmos se tocó con un Linn LM-1.

Probablemente el videoclip de “Thriller”, dirigido por John Landis y Michael Jackson, sea uno de los más influyentes en la cultura pop. Costó medio millón de dólares (el más caro entonces), dura casi 14 minutos y arranca con una frase que Michael Jackson creyó necesario aclarar para evitar polémicas en el año en el que fue lanzado (1983):
“Debido a mis fuertes convicciones personales, deseo subrayar que esta película no apoya de ninguna manera la creencia en lo oculto”.
El vídeo logró duplicar las ventas del álbum Thriller de Michael y vendió más de un millón de copias en VHS, lo que le convirtió en el clip en soporte físico más exitoso de la historia.

Un homenaje al terror
La letra empieza situándonos a medianoche y a la luz de la Luna, algo muy típico de las películas de terror. Es probable que a la hora de hacer el vídeo hubiera influencias de películas recién lanzadas como Halloween (1978), Viernes 13 (1980), o Un hombre lobo americano en Londres (1981).
La historia que relatan los versos es la de un chico que lleva al cine a su novia para ver una película de miedo. En teoría, el objetivo era asustar a la chica para que acabara abrazando al avispado protagonista.
En los versos hay referencias a la muerte y su mano helada, a la película Alien: el octavo pasajero, que salió tres años antes que el vídeo, a llamar por teléfono a un exorcista y cosas típicas de las películas de terror, como los monstruos con la mayor cantidad de ojos posibles. A más ojos, más miedo daban.

Se pueden buscar otros dobles sentidos, como el que da título a la canción. “Thriller” puede referirse no solo al tipo de película que la pareja va a ver, si no también a la intención del protagonista de “estremecer” o “thrill” en inglés a su chica.
Si nos fijamos, el significado de “Thriller”, aunque es una historia de ficción, podría generar alguna polémica si fuera publicado a día de hoy: ¿un chico que lleva al cine a su novia para conseguir que ella le abrace? Me imagino las acusaciones de acoso sexual a la chica, de objetivización de la mujer, etc. No olvidemos que el vídeo y la canción fueron lanzados hace ya más de 35 años.
